How deaf people talk with emotion? By Bradley

 1

*Stand speaking with no volume for ten seconds*

I am standing here with you to talk about how deaf people talk with emotion. Imagine the world we live in without sound. Imagine not hearing people talking to you, music, cars and vehicles travelling, hearing your dog bark. There are so many sounds that make our lives better.

2

The term deaf is someone who can’t hear anything, they can only

understand sign language. Some people can lip read. They can't even hear music or games. I would feel very sad if I couldn’t listen to music everyday.

3

Emotion is a term of facial expression and the tone of someone's voice. Deaf people can read people’s facial expressions but cannot hear any sound coming out of their mouths. Emotions can be used in any way: emojis, stickers, characters from games and many more daily expressions.

4

Some examples of expressions are physical expressions, like body language, gestures and of course facial expressions.

5

Can you honestly imagine what is would be like to be completely deaf. Some people are partially deaf so they can use hearing aids to support them and give them some sense of sound.

6

Facts about Deaf People in NZ

  • 1 in 6 of the UK adult population is affected by hearing loss.

  • About 900,000 people are severely or profoundly deaf.

  • Only one out of every five people who could benefit from a hearing aid actually wear one. (National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders

  • 9 in every 10 deaf people are born to deaf parents, but only 1 in 10 of those parents will learn sign language.

  • A 12-year study conducted by the neurology department at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine found that untreated hearing loss increased the risk for dementia.

  • In NZ 11,000 people use NZ Sign Language.
